About Breast Augmentation
Breast Augmentation is one of the fastest growing plastic surgery procedures nationwide because of the great results that can be achieved, and also because of the quick recovery time. Moreover, in a recent study, 96% of women who had breast enlargement surgery said they were either highly satisfied or satisfied with their results.
Our practice in Knoxville, Tennessee mirrors the national statistics with over 225 women choosing breast augmentation surgery last year alone.
It is our most popular procedure, followed by tummy tucks, liposuction and facelifts, in that order.
New! "Today in Plastic Surgery" Podcast Series
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has produced a news series of podcasts designed to better inform potential patients about current issues in the field of plastic surgery. They chose Dr. Reath and one of his patients to be featured in the most recent podcast about breast augmentation.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation (also known as augmentation mammaplasty) is a surgical procedure that uses implants to produce fuller breasts or restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy.
This highly individualized procedure should be undertaken for yourself, not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image.
In this twenty minute podcast:
- Dr. Reath, an ASPS Member Surgeon, discusses various breast augmentation options, what to expect during the consultation with your surgeon, and safety and recovery issues to consider
- A patient of Dr. Reath's describes her reasons for having the procedure, how she prepared for her consultation, and how long it took to return to her normal daily routine

There are many reasons why women consider having breast augmentation surgery. Many tell us they just want to be able to buy a bathing suit that fits!
The majority of women increase from one to two cup sizes to obtain the flattering symmetrical figure they always wanted. Some come to Dr. Reath after they have had children and lost their breast size after breast-feeding. Women, who have had a lot of sagging of the breast, may choose to have a breast lift along with the enlargement. We have many breast lift pictures on the breast lift procedure page.
During a consultation, women are able to try on implant sizers in order for Dr. Reath to understand the results they want to achieve. Our patients say it is very helpful to them to visualize their results. He will give his professional opinion based on what is best for each woman's goal and body type.
Many of the implants Dr. Reath uses are filled with a saline solution (saltwater) and can be placed either over or under the chest muscle wall. However, more and more women are asking for silicone implants which are now available. You can read more about silicone implants at the bottom of this page.
Note: It is normal for women to have one breast that is slightly larger than the other. However there are many women who suffer from severe breast asymmetry. Finding clothes that fit is a major problem. (Imagine the difficulty picking out a wedding dress.) The good news is that it can be corrected. Breast augmentation on one side and/or a breast lift on the other side can be performed to even out the size and shape of the breasts. *See the breast lift procedure page for photos of what can be down to correct breast asymmetry.

Here are some before and after augmentation photographs of Dr Reath's patients:
Before & After Augmentation: The patient is a 28 year old and had concerns regarding the size of her breasts. She was very active and thought that her breasts were not proportioned to her body. She weighs 115 pounds and is 5’6”. Dr. Reath placed a 325 saline implant, which he filled to 375-cc’s on both sides underneath the muscle. She is thrilled with her results and now feels like she is much more proportioned.

The good news is that breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure and does not involve an overnight stay in the hospital. The entire operation is done under general anesthesia and takes about an hour. At the end of the operation, patients are placed in a special bra to support their breasts. After recovery from the anesthesia, they go home in the care of their family.
Our Surgical Recovery Kits are a great personal touch. Patients tell us that the recovery kits we include with their surgeries are an area that really sets us apart. Each recovery kit contains items hand-picked to make your recovery faster and more pleasant. They are packaged in an attractive quilted spa bag. We put together everything you’ll need after surgery so you don’t have to. People who have had surgery with other doctors are amazed that we include these kits at no charge for all of our surgery patients.
New! We now include medical-grade silicone shapes (which are medically proven to aid in healing and reduce the appearance of scars) in all of our breast augmentation recovery kits.
Helping our patients manage a speedy recovery is one of our primary missions. Most patients are up and about the day after a breast augmentation or breast lift but instructed to rest and avoid any lifting. About a week after the operation patients are seen in the office to check their surgical sites and instruct them in massage and stretching exercises. Expect the stitches to be removed in about a week.
Most women are able to return to normal activities in 7 to 10 days and usually need no more than a week off from work.
Silicone is Back!
The MemoryGel™ silicone breast implants you've been hearing about have been successfully used and trusted for 20 years by millions women all over the world. Why? Because these implants feel more like natural breast tissue - without compromising reliability or safety. After almost two decades of research and testing with surgeons and patients, MemoryGel™ breast implants are now available to women in the U.S.
The FDA recently (November 2006) issued an approval that will allow the unrestricted use of silicone breast implants for most women. In the early 1990’s, silicone breast implants were removed from the market due to safety concerns. However, data that has been gathered since that time has proven these implants to be safe. This data was gathered over the last 14 years through an adjunct study that allowed the use of silicone implants for only very select patients. Dr. Reath is one of the plastic surgeons who participated in this study, and has been using silicone breast implants since that time.
We now offer silicone breasts implants for women seeking breast enlargement, as long as they are over the age of 22. (The FDA feels that in some women breast development may not be complete until age 22.) Silicone implants can also be used in any women seeking breast reconstruction, or the correction of developmental abnormalities.
Plastic surgeons, who have not had experience with silicone implants through this study over the last 14 years, must complete a device education course prior to using these implants. Dr. Reath has been using silicone implants as an important part of his practice for over 20 years, and can offer them immediately. There are important differences in the use of saline and silicone implants. Understanding these differences comes with experience.
There has been so much talked and written about silicone implants for more than a decade. This has resulted in confusion on the part of many patients. This action by the FDA truly clears the air on the safety and use of silicone implants. And, most importantly, it has given women considering breast surgery important choices in the type of implant they wish to receive. Dr. Reath and his staff will continue to inform and educate patients about their options, so you can be confident in your implant decision.

Video Demonstration:
We have cut a MemoryGel™ breast implant in half to plainly show how the material holds together uniformly (no leaking) while still retaining the natural give of breast tissue.
It does this because of a cohesive, gelatin-like substance that acts as a solid rather than a liquid.
Click on the picture to watch a video which dramatically illustrates the benefits of cohesive MemoryGel silicone implants.
